Farm Bill - Packer Ownership Ban
The Packer Ban issue is very important to UFCW. It is important not just for what it means, but for what it means to our employers. Please call your Senators and let them know of our support (a sample script is shown below), ask for their support, and please report back to us and let us know where your Senators stand. We have attached a copy of a letter President Hansen sent to the Senate regarding this issue. |

LPR SCRIPT RE: PROPOSED PACKER BAN
On behalf of the 250,000 UFCW workers who process America’s meat supply, I am calling to voice our support for the Packer Ownership Ban in the Farm Bill (S. 2302, Sec. 10207). UFCW supports a ban on meatpacking corporations owning livestock. Currently, a handful of meatpacking corporations dominate the beef and pork industries. As a result, farmers have lost business. When meatpackers own livestock from birth to slaughter they can move livestock and production to wherever they can find the cheapest land and labor. Jobs are lost and local economies never recover. We must ensure independence for farmers and stability for rural communities.
The ban on packer ownership in the Senate Agriculture Committee's bill is good for family farmers and ranchers; good for rural communities; good for the environment; and indeed, good for the working men and women of America.
