|UFCW Pharmacists employed at Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons throughout Southern CA vote to authorize economic action, including a strike, if the Company refuses to make a fair offer for a new contract. Pharmacist demands include annual wage increases, maintaining Employer provided medical benefits and the defined pension plan and addressing staffing issues in the pharmacies. Although the Collective Bargaining Agreement expired March 6, the 3 companies have failed to propose any wage increases in response to Union demands, are unwilling to continue funding medical benefits at the current levels and have refused to make any changes to staffing issues, claiming the pharmacists are not overworked.
Profits at Albertsons, Vons and Ralphs continue to soar while employee wages stagnate. Pharmacists often work 12-hour shifts with only a 30 minute lunch break. Pharmacist responsibilities continue to increase as more procedures formerly performed in doctor's offices transition to retail pharmacies.
The UFCW continues to strive through collective bargaining, legislation and regulation to provide retail pharmacists with adequate compensation, benefits and protections at the work place.
