Leading Academics Join Workers to Release CAP Study Showing Unions’ Positive Impact on CA Economy

Academics, community leaders and workers joined SEIU and the California Labor Federation on Feb. 19 to release a report from the Center for American Progress (CAP) showing how union workers benefit the California economy. At events across the state, participants also stressed the potential benefits of the Employee Free Choice Act, which would restore workers’ freedom to form and join unions.

The CAP study found that wages for unionized workers in California were 12.7 percent higher—$2.74 dollars more per hour—than non-union workers with similar jobs during a four-year period between 2004 and 2007 wages.

Further, the study showed that if unionization rates were the same as they were in 1983, new union workers in California would earn an estimated $4.8 billion more in wages and salaries per year.
